Printer says paper jam but there’s no paper? Try this
A “paper jam” error with no visible paper is frustrating, but it’s usually a tiny torn scrap, something blocking the moving carriage, or a sensor that needs a reset.
Quick answer
Turn the printer off and unplug it. Open every door and tray and use a flashlight to look for small torn scraps. Check the rear access panel. Make sure nothing blocks the ink carriage, then plug back in and power on.
Why this happens
- A small torn piece of paper hiding near the rollers or rear panel.
- A foreign object (paper clip, label, packing material) inside.
- The ink carriage can’t move freely, which many printers report as a jam.
- Dirty or worn pick-up rollers.
Clear the jam safely
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Remove the paper tray and any paper. Open the front, top and rear access doors.
- Use a flashlight to look for scraps around the rollers. Pull any paper out slowly, in the direction it travels, with both hands.
- On inkjets, check that the ink carriage can slide gently by hand and nothing is under it. Remove any packing tape or foam left from setup.
- Close everything, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Reload a small stack of paper (not overfilled) with the guides snug against the edges.
If the error comes back
- Clean the paper pick-up rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.
- Use only flat, dry paper within the weight your printer supports.
- Don’t mix paper types in the tray.
- Persistent false jams with nothing inside can mean a faulty sensor — that’s a hardware repair, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case.

Frequently asked questions
Can a paper jam error be caused by ink cartridges?
Indirectly, yes. If the cartridge carriage is blocked or a cartridge isn’t seated, the carriage can’t move, and some printers report that as a jam.
