How to add a printer in Windows 10

Windows 10 still runs on millions of PCs and adds most printers automatically. Here’s the fastest route and the manual fallback.

Quick answer

Go to Settings › Devices › Printers & scanners › Add a printer or scanner. Select your printer when it appears, or click “The printer that I want isn’t listed” to add it by IP address.

Add a printer

  1. Connect the printer to Wi-Fi (or plug it in with USB) and turn it on.
  2. Open Settings › Devices › Printers & scanners.
  3. Click Add a printer or scanner, select your printer, and click Add device.
  4. Select the printer › Manage › Print a test page.

Add it manually

  1. Click The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  2. Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  3. Enter the IP address from the printer’s network configuration page and follow the prompts.

Default printer

Untick Let Windows manage my default printer in Printers & scanners, then select your printer › Manage › Set as default.
