How to add a printer on a Mac
Most printers made in the last decade support AirPrint, which means your Mac can use them with no extra software. Here’s how to add one, and what to do if it doesn’t show up.
Quick answer
Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer, Scanner or Fax…, select your printer, choose AirPrint in the Use menu, and click Add.
Add a printer (AirPrint or USB)
- Connect the printer to the same Wi-Fi as your Mac, or plug it in with USB.
- Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners. (On macOS Monterey and earlier: System Preferences › Printers & Scanners.)
- Click Add Printer, Scanner or Fax… (or the + button).
- Select your printer. In the Use menu, choose AirPrint if available, otherwise your printer model.
- Click Add, then print a test from any app.
Add by IP address
- In the Add window, click the IP tab (globe icon).
- Type the printer’s IP address. Set Protocol to IPP (Internet Printing Protocol).
- Choose AirPrint or your model in Use, then click Add.
Scanning on a Mac
If your printer has a scanner, select it in Printers & Scanners and click Open Scanner, or use the Image Capture app. For extra scanning features, install the manufacturer’s Mac software from its official site.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install a driver on a Mac?
Usually not. AirPrint printers work without any download. Install the manufacturer’s software only for extras like advanced scanning.
Why doesn’t my printer appear on my Mac?
Make sure both are on the same network and the printer has finished connecting to Wi-Fi. If it still doesn’t show, add it by IP address.
